Nice report Pete. Sounds an interesting mountain. Never thought of climbing it though I've been to Kenya in the past, but you make it sound tempting.

Great report and photos Peter! What a difficult but wise decision to take. But you now have a reason to go back! And so many fantastic memories by the sound of it. Silke

Funny thing about the antibiotics is that I was already on antibiotics after being given a week's course of doxycycline to test for side effects as a malaria prophylactic. But what'll stop you contracting malaria is clearly no match for some of our Highland horrors!

Just a quick note to say I've been 'paying' for the weekend with a swollen (+ sore) lower left leg bitten twice by some unknown beastie to let some other unknown organism in through the bite holes, two sets of antibiotics to cover two possibilities and a line drawn on my calf yesterday to mark the extent of the infection for another inspection today!

All apparently quite unusual (doc maybe sees one or two cases like this per year) and now hopefully responding to the drugs (swelling dropping and more itchy than painful except when bumped), although it would apparently have required 'more aggressive treatment' if I'd left it much longer...

Discovered last Friday (while looking for an alternative to the plastic) that the tube of my old Generation Bb whistle was a near match for the bore of the wee Chieftain, so guess what happened next?

Yep, out came the hacksaw and I had a 23mm length of thin-walled brass tubing with a couple of wraps of PTFE tape to hold it in place! But 23mm wasn't quite long enough (improving the top C# at the expense of the high A/B tuning when moved up and vice versa when moved down), so I cut another at 28mm which is currently still fitted along with some tape on both third and sixth holes. And (without having played it that much since) I think that's an improvement, although it's still very much a 'niche' whistle and seems prone to sharpness when warm with or without the bore insert and tuning slide out.
