Blackwater bog loop

Filed under: Running — admin @ 8:22 pm

Having discovered a couple of weeks ago that there was an apparently unmapped local track I’d never run linking Black Corries Lodge to the Blackwater Reservoir, I’d been itching to give it a whirl and finally took myself round to Kings House to do so today. And it’s a strange track, not bad to run on despite being quite soft and earthy compared to the Black Corries ‘motorway’, having no obvious purpose (though surely there must be one!) and terminating in the middle of nowhere at the Reservoir’s edge. From where I decided to bash on ‘over’ the rough and boggy ground to the Dam (my second visit of the weekend after doing an anticlockwise circuit of the main track and Ciaran Path yesterday) and more of the same through the pass to Altnafeadh to complete a logical, if sometimes barely ‘runnable’, loop (with thanks to Colin Knox for the inadvertent inspiration!).

  1. Interesting circuit, Pete. (You should show it to Keith Hughes, he knows that area quite well ;-) )

It looks like the track to nowhere, that terminates at the south edge of the reservoir, pre-dates the reservoir; and historically linked up with the track on the north side of the reservoir terminating @ NN284611?? Just conjecture on that one! You know the area much better than me!!

  2. Looks tempting on paper, Murdo, but afraid the evidence on the ground says not with this one surely bulldozed and not of that antiquity.

Heavy going from the track end to the Dam and through to Altnafeadh (which latter bit I’ve done before), but could make a grand longer circuit taking in the main Dam track and Devil’s Staircase with just 2.5 miles or so of significantly slower ground to link the various tracks and trails together.

  3. Pete, maybe you could set yourself a long term project of constructing a “road”, like Callum’s Road on the Isle of Raasay, to make it a runnable circuit…. Pete’s Road. M

  4. Nah, it’s runnable enough (‘barely’, perhaps, but I still ‘ran’ it) as it is! :-P
